48% of the neighbourhoods in the City Fringe were among the 10% most deprived areas in the UK in 2006 and unemployment in the area was higher than across London as a whole.

However, 42% of jobs in the London Boroughs of Tower Hamlets, Hackney, Islington and Camden were in the City Fringe core area. In 2004 there were almost 22,000 businesses representing some 276,000 jobs in the core area.
