Sectors
The sector and cluster approach to economic development is key to the City Growth Strategy.

Sectors are groups of businesses carrying out the same activity. Several industry sectors are concentrated in the City Fringe area, such as financial and professional services, the creative industries, and hospitality and catering.

A cluster is a more complex grouping of related businesses and organisations, linked together through customer, supplier or similar relationships as well as through geography. Such clusters would include interconnected companies, specialised suppliers, service providers, firms and related industries, and associated institutions (such as universities and trade associations) in particular fields that compete, but also co-operate.

For each industry that is highly concentrated in the City Fringe, we have brought together representatives to form “Cluster Action Groups”. Owners and managers of businesses in the industry, as well as representatives of other organisations in the cluster, work with us to define ways in which their industry can be supported. These are written up as “Sector Investment Plans”: in effect, a business plan for the development of that industry in the City Fringe.

Certain industries such as print and publishing and jewellery have a long association with the area, whereas the concentration of the wider creative industries and hospitality and catering businesses is more recent.

The CFP now has programmes in many of its key sectors. For the latest developments please visit each sector page:
